Tuesday Thingers ~ DNF a.k.a. Did Not Finish

Tuesday Thingers is hosted by Wendi at Wendi's Book Corner.

Questions: How often do you find yourself struggling through a book (if you HAD to estimate)? How far will you read before you stop and consider it a DNF (Did not finish)? Will you skim ahead and see if it gets any better? Once you put it down, do you still write a quick review? What do you do with the book when you are done?

My Answer: I'd have to say that it happens occasionally....that I try to read a book and I just can't get into it. Lately I have been lucky...I have been loving everything that I have read. What I do with those types of books really depends on how frustrating they are to me. For example, if I start to read a book and right from the start I don't like the author's style of writing, I really don't give the book much of a chance because I know that the whole book will be that way. So...usually those get put to the side immediately. If I pick up a book and it is slow to start, I do give it a chance...usually to around page 50 or so. Sometimes I am pleasantly surprised...the book will pick up and it will turn into a really good story. If I read a book and don't like the character(s), then I try to hang in there as long as I can, but sometimes I just can't do it. I find myself getting frustrated or angry at the character.....not worth my reading time, that's for sure.
I usually post these un-readable books on PBS because someone else might really like them.

What do you do when you can't finish a book?

I usually try to finish it. Skimming is a great help in this department and I mention that I had to skim in order to get through.

If I just can't finish it I put it down and don't mention it. But I don't like to do that because it seems like a waste of time.

I've been pretty lucky and choosing books I'll like. If I don't, I trade them in for something else.

I'm really gonna have to give PBS a try. Or Bookmooch. I've got quite a few paperbacks I'd like to find new homes for, just haven't managed to make myself put them out there.
