~My Cat String~

I spoke to the vet earlier about String. She threw up during the night and is not able to keep food down. Her blood tests came back all in the normal range, except her liver function. He suggested that we take her to the vet school or the specialty veterinary hospital for over the weekend, so that she may get constant care. He also said that it would run upwards of $1,200 to $1,500 dollars. My husband and I just don't have that kind of money. We are going to try to care for her at home for the next two days. The vet has given her something for her nausea, and hopefully she will be able to eat and keep it down later today. That is the biggest concern. We can give her fluids under her skin to help hydrate her. Also, the vet said that the liver can regenerate itself. She is permanently off of her thyroid meds. He says that her liver may be back to an "ok" state in 3 to 4 weeks, provided that she eats and stays hydrated.
I want what is best for String. I know that she is sixteen years old. I at least want to try to care for her myself for the next couple of days to see how she does. If she is still vomiting, lethargic, etc. we can take her to the emergency vet clinic if it gets too bad. I want to give it at least one more try. I am not ready for her to leave me yet. Steve and I have had to make this decision three times in the past 2 years and it is awful every time. If String is so sick that she is completely miserable, I will know. And she will let me know that it is time to say goodbye.

I hope String pulls through. I will keep my fingers crossed. I have been there too and know how awful you must feel. Keep hoping.

I hope String makes it too! Thelma (my cat) has actually also been jaundiced (though it had nothing to do with her hyperthyroidism) and I gave her a homeopathic remedy (on the vet's advice). Don't know if that might work for String too (or if you have access to homeopathic remedies), but just thought I'd mention it, in case. I'm thinking of you both.

I'm thinking of you and String. It's always hard to see a pet go through this.

Missy, I'm so sorry. It's heartbreaking when a pet is sick especially when they are like kids to us. You know it doesn't matter how old they are, whether they are young or already old, the pain of thinking of losing them isn't any different. I am praying really hard that String will pull through and get stronger. Feel free to email me if you need to talk.

I'm sorry to hear about your cat String. It is the most difficult decision in the world to make. But when you make it, it is made out of love. And you're right - she will let you know. My beloved Murphy - a 14 yr old Alaskan Malamute let us know he was tired and ready. It still didn't make it easier. God, I'm tearing up now thinking of him.
