Booking Through Thursday - Blurb

Suggested by Jennysbooks:

Something I’ve been thinking about lately: “What words/phrases in a blurb make a book irresistible? What words/phrases will make you put the book back down immediately?”

If the phrase "coming-of-age" is in the blurb, then I am definitely interested. Also, if I see that the story takes place in the south, and is narrated by a child or teenager, I know that it is a book that I will like. "Memoir" is another word that I search for...I love memoirs!

If I see "Historical" anywhere in the blurb, then I put the book back down...I don't care for historical fiction. "Murder Mystery" or "Whodunit" I don't read those, either.

I am never drawn in by "New York Times Bestseller", or "Oprah's Book Club". I will pick these books up and scan the back covers or inside sleeves...but it is usually not something that I am interested in.

What about you? What "blurbs" draw you to a certain book?

I think it is interesting to actually think about what we read. I like your answers. Although I didn't post it, Mysteries seem to turn me off as well.

Amazing how different everyone's choices are. It's quite fascinating reading this.

"Coming of Age" is a good one! And I agree with you on the Oprah Book Club thing. I don't want to sound arrogant/snobbish or anything but that's actually something that will stop me from buying a book.

I forgot to add coming of age. That too interests me.

gosh i can't think of any blurbs that beckon me because i am so eclectic... i think its all about the cover art that gets me, so shallow huh! i do look at the nyt best sellers, i don't really like mass market books, but some i can't resist seeing what the fuss is about. i don't like sex or violence so easy to avoid that and i have never liked oprah's books, although i have read a few before she found them, i avoid her selections. i am moody when i read is the best way to put it so no blurb is going to lure me on any given day~

Hi Missy,
I, on the other hand, love Historical Fiction! Especially if it American history. I also love Memoirs! I do not care for Mysteries, but "Physical Thriller" entices me.

I'm very shallow. I'm attracted to the covers.

I'm suspicious of memoirs because of embellishment and the writer having the discretion to withhold all the facts or scew(sp?) them in the way they want, kind of like can a reality show really be a reality show. I'm most definitely drawn to a book cover first and foremost. If it's an author I love, I will read it no matter the cover/title/critics/lists, whatever. Anything southern, and definitely books about a time past, though not necessarily historical. I used to like continuations, like triligies, but after a while you forget which one you've read.

Nice to hear south appeals to you!

The word destroy catches my attention, as does race against time. I'm not a mystery person, so any words that make the book sound like one usually turn me away.

Yes, I am drawn in by certain words, too. "Coming-of-age" intrigues me, as do words like "family secrets," "betrayals," "family dysfunction."

Call me crazy, but the more messed-up the family, the more I'm hooked!

Must be all those years of social work!

Hahahaha, on my comment - I meant "physiological thriller"

NOT physical, oh my word! I am so stupid.

'Oprah's Book Club" would make me put the book down immediately. However, i do enjoy historical fiction and mysteries but then again I think I am a perfect definition of an eclectic reader.
